Tucson, AZ – Dangerous winds could sweep across southeastern Arizona beginning Friday, October 16, as a powerful weather system brings gusts approaching 70 mph, raising concerns about hazardous travel, blowing dust and possible power outages through Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service NWS in Tucson, a High Wind Warning has been issued for much of southeastern Arizona as a strong backdoor cold front moves into the region from the east Thursday night into Saturday.
Friday is expected to bring the strongest winds , with sustained easterly winds of 35 to 45 mph and gusts ranging from 55 to 70 mph in areas covered by the High Wind Warning.
Other communities under a Wind Advisory could experience sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph, with gusts reaching 50 to 60 mph.
The strongest winds are expected across portions of southeastern Arizona, including areas east and southeast of Tucson.
Wind gusts of this magnitude can make driving difficult, particularly for high profile vehicles such as semitrailers, recreational vehicles and trucks traveling on exposed highways.
Blowing dust could also reduce visibility in vulnerable areas, while strong gusts may damage trees, unsecured outdoor objects and power lines.
Windy conditions are expected to continue Saturday, October 17 , although the strongest winds should gradually diminish during the afternoon.
The NWS forecasts sustained easterly winds of 25 to 35 mph Saturday, with gusts between 50 and 60 mph in advisory areas.
Winds should slowly weaken Saturday afternoon but remain elevated into the evening.
Residents are encouraged to secure patio furniture, trash containers and other loose outdoor items before conditions deteriorate.
Drivers should remain alert for sudden crosswinds and changing visibility, especially along open stretches of highway.
Residents should also prepare for the possibility of localized power disruptions if damaging gusts develop.
