Phoenix, AZ – Portions of south central and eastern Arizona face a severe thunderstorm threat Sunday afternoon, Nov. 1, with potentially damaging wind gusts reaching 60 mph, hail and a very low chance of an isolated tornado.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, the NOAA Storm Prediction Center has placed portions of the region under a Level 1 of 5 marginal risk for severe weather, with the greatest threat expected during the afternoon hours Sunday.
Forecasters expect showers and embedded thunderstorms to develop across parts of Arizona, with a few storms potentially becoming strong to severe.
The primary concern is isolated damaging wind gusts reaching 60 mph, which could create hazardous driving conditions, blow around unsecured outdoor objects and potentially damage trees or other vulnerable structures.
The National Weather Service also identifies a low hail threat, with hailstones potentially reaching one half inch in diameter.
Although the tornado threat remains very low, forecasters indicate that an isolated tornado cannot be completely ruled out.
The highlighted severe weather risk extends across portions of south central and eastern Arizona, including areas near Phoenix, Mesa, Casa Grande, Globe and Payson.
Communities farther east, including parts of Gila County, should also monitor changing weather conditions throughout Sunday afternoon.
Strong thunderstorm winds could create difficult travel conditions along major highways, including Interstates 10 and 17 and U.S. Route 60, particularly where storms produce sudden gusts or reduced visibility.
Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor furniture, monitor updated forecasts and ensure they have multiple ways to receive severe weather warnings.
The marginal risk designation means isolated severe thunderstorms are possible, rather than widespread severe weather being expected across the entire region.
The National Weather Service advises residents to remain weather aware through Sunday afternoon, especially as thunderstorms develop and move across the highlighted risk areas.
Additional forecast updates and any issued warnings can be monitored through the National Weather Service Phoenix office.
