Phoenix, AZ – Strong winds could whip dust across highways and send unsecured objects airborne Sunday, October 11, as gusts approaching 45 mph threaten the Phoenix metropolitan area. Drivers, particularly those operating larger vehicles, could encounter hazardous conditions through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Phoenix, an official Wind Advisory remains in effect from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. MST Sunday. Sustained south winds of 15 to 25 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 45 mph across portions of south central Arizona.
Wind Advisory Covers Phoenix Metro
The advisory includes Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale and surrounding communities.
Forecasters warn that crosswinds could make driving difficult, especially for trucks, recreational vehicles and other high profile vehicles.
Strong winds crossing desert terrain may also produce blowing dust or sand, temporarily reducing visibility.
Residents should secure lightweight outdoor objects and use extra caution while traveling.
Showers and Thunderstorms Possible
Sunday's forecast for the Mesa area includes an 80% chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1 p.m.
Afternoon temperatures should reach approximately 86 degrees, with locally forecast wind gusts up to 30 mph.
Rain Continues Into Monday
Columbus Day, Monday, October 12, brings another 70% chance of precipitation, with showers and thunderstorms possible.
Temperatures will reach approximately 82 degrees, while gusts could approach 25 mph.
Tuesday, October 13, brings improving conditions, with a 30% chance of morning showers and highs near 77 degrees.
Drier Weather Returns Midweek
Wednesday, October 14, should turn sunny, with highs near 78 degrees.
Thursday and Friday bring additional sunshine, with temperatures climbing to approximately 85 and 87 degrees.
Residents should monitor updated weather alerts and avoid driving into areas where blowing dust severely limits visibility.
The Wind Advisory expires Sunday afternoon unless extended by the National Weather Service.
