Phoenix, AZ – Three words in a winter weather warning could signal extraordinary danger in Arizona during the 2026 27 winter season. While Phoenix and Tucson rarely experience severe winter precipitation, communities around Flagstaff, the Mogollon Rim and northeastern Arizona can face dangerous snowstorms and highway closures.
According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, the National Weather Service is expanding the use of "Particularly Dangerous Situation," or PDS, wording in select Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings.
The wording is reserved for exceptionally dangerous storms that could threaten lives, transportation and critical infrastructure.
What Are the Three Words Arizona Residents Should Know?
"Particularly Dangerous Situation" highlights extraordinary danger within an existing weather warning.
In a Blizzard Warning, PDS wording could emphasize life threatening winds and severely reduced visibility from falling or blowing snow.
In an Ice Storm Warning, it could highlight potentially devastating ice accumulation.
Why Could This Matter Across Arizona?
Arizona's winter risks are concentrated in higher elevations.
Flagstaff, Williams and communities along Interstate 40 can experience heavy snow, powerful winds and whiteout conditions.
Prescott, Payson, Show Low and the Mogollon Rim also face hazardous mountain travel. Snow and blowing snow can disrupt routes connecting northern Arizona with Phoenix and other lower elevation communities.
During an extreme event, Interstate 40 near Flagstaff and Winslow, Interstate 17 between Phoenix and Flagstaff, and U.S. Highway 89 across northern Arizona could become hazardous or impassable.
Stranded motorists may face dangerous exposure, while severe storms can disrupt emergency services.
These are possible impacts, not predictions of an approaching storm.
Is PDS a New Winter Weather Warning?
No. PDS is additional wording within certain existing Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings, not a separate warning category.
Most Arizona winter storms will not receive the designation.
What Should Arizona Residents Do?
If PDS wording appears in a local warning, residents should avoid unnecessary travel, follow emergency instructions and check Arizona Department of Transportation road conditions.
The expanded terminology does not mean a catastrophic winter storm is currently forecast for Arizona.
