Kayenta, AZ – The Arizona Department of Transportation ADOT has closed US 160 in both directions following significant roadway damage caused by heavy rainfall in the area. The closure, which was implemented for the safety of motorists, is situated east of Dennehotso near Laguna Wash. As of Thursday, September 17, 2026, officials have not provided an estimated time for when the highway might reopen.
According to ADOT, the eastbound closure begins at milepost 402, while the westbound closure is enforced at the junction of US 160 and US 191 at milepost 435. Authorities are actively advising motorists in the region to expect delays and plan their travel accordingly. The damage to the road surface has rendered it impassable, necessitating immediate detours for those traveling through the area.
Drivers heading eastbound are being directed to travel south on Route 59 and then continue north on US 191 to bypass the affected section. Conversely, those traveling westbound should utilize US 191 to head south before transitioning to Route 59 to return to their destination. ADOT stressed that these routes are the safest alternatives for current traffic flow.
