Flagstaff, AZ – Northern Arizona could come into play next week if a developing western storm takes one of the more southerly tracks now being considered, potentially bringing a colder and wetter pattern — and possibly snow to higher elevations.
The National Weather Service in Pueblo, Colorado, said confidence is increasing that accumulating snow will develop along Colorado’s Continental Divide as the system crosses the Rockies around Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 12 14.
For Arizona, the forecast is considerably less certain.
The range of possible storm tracks shown by the NWS includes scenarios that carry the system farther south through the Southwest. Such a track could place northern Arizona, including the higher terrain around Flagstaff, closer to the colder and more unsettled side of the storm.
That makes high elevation snow possible , but not yet an established Arizona forecast. The Pueblo outlook does not provide Arizona snowfall amounts, snow levels or probabilities, and it remains possible that the main storm and coldest air stay farther north.
The distinction will depend heavily on where the storm ultimately crosses the Rockies. A more northern track would limit Arizona’s involvement, while a deeper southward track could increase the chances for precipitation and colder temperatures across the northern part of the state.
Winter conditions in mountain areas during October are not unusual, something forecasters are also emphasizing with this developing system.
For now, Colorado remains the area with the clearest official signal for accumulating mountain snow , while northern Arizona sits on the more uncertain southern edge of the potential storm pattern.
Readers in Flagstaff and northern Arizona should watch subsequent National Weather Service forecasts as Oct. 12 14 approaches. Those updates should determine whether the storm reaches far enough south for meaningful rain, colder temperatures or high country snow.
