Fairbanks, AK – Snow is expected to spread across Alaska’s Central and Eastern Interior tonight and continue through Friday morning, with the largest totals near the Eastern Alaska Range.
According to the National Weather Service in Fairbanks, most of the Interior is forecast to receive about 1 to 3 inches during the multi day snowfall event. Higher amounts of roughly 6 to 11 inches are expected in the Eastern Alaska Range and along portions of the Richardson Highway.
An NWS 48 hour snowfall forecast issued Wednesday afternoon shows about 1 inch around Fairbanks and Delta Junction, 2 inches near Salcha and 3 inches near Healy. The graphic depicts considerably heavier snow farther south, including about 8 inches near Paxson.
Other parts of the Interior are forecast to receive lighter accumulations. Around 1 inch is shown near Northway, Eagle, Cantwell and Slana, while locations farther northwest, including Tanana and Lake Minchumina, are shown with little or no accumulation.
The forecast graphic covers snowfall through 10 a.m. AKDT Friday.
Travel conditions could become slippery as fresh snow accumulates, particularly during the morning hours. The Weather Service urged drivers to use caution on potentially slick roads.
Conditions will vary substantially across the region, with the heaviest snowfall concentrated near the Eastern Alaska Range rather than across the entire Interior. Residents and travelers, especially those using the Richardson Highway, should continue monitoring National Weather Service forecasts as the snow develops tonight and persists into Friday morning.
