Cantwell, AK – An early season winter weather system is bringing potentially heavy snowfall to portions of Alaska, with up to 12 inches possible near Broad Pass and hazardous travel conditions expected along sections of the Parks and Richardson highways. Drivers could encounter snow covered roads, slippery bridges and blowing snow through Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Anchorage and Fairbanks, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across portions of the Northern Susitna Valley, Southern Denali Borough and eastern Alaska Range as snow spreads through the region Saturday, Oct. 10.
Broad Pass faces the greatest snowfall potential, with total accumulations ranging from 4 to 12 inches through 7 a.m. AKDT Sunday.
Forecasters expect an initial 2 to 8 inches Saturday morning before snow potentially mixes with rain during the afternoon. Another 2 to 4 inches could accumulate Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Travel along the Parks Highway could become particularly difficult , especially between mileposts 202 and 237 near Cantwell and Carlo Creek.
The National Weather Service in Fairbanks forecasts up to 8 inches of snow across portions of Southern Denali Borough, with wind gusts reaching 35 mph and producing areas of blowing snow.
Farther east, another Winter Weather Advisory covers the Richardson Highway between mileposts 202 and 224, south of Trims Camp.
That advisory runs from 4 p.m. Saturday until 4 p.m. AKDT Sunday , with snowfall accumulations up to 8 inches and gusty winds potentially reducing visibility.
Roads and bridges are expected to become slick and snow covered, particularly during periods of heavier snowfall.
Drivers should reduce speeds, increase following distances and prepare for rapidly changing conditions in mountain passes.
Travelers are encouraged to check 511.alaska.gov or call 511 before departing.
While advisories near Broad Pass and Cantwell expire Sunday morning, hazardous winter conditions could continue farther east into Sunday afternoon.
