Mobile, AL – Residents along coastal Alabama and northwest Florida face an increasing threat of significant impacts late this week as Tropical Storm Isaias strengthens over the Gulf of Mexico and is forecast to become a hurricane before reaching the northern Gulf Coast.
According to the National Weather Service in Mobile/Pensacola, Isaias strengthened overnight into Wednesday while moving east northeast across the southwestern Gulf. Forecasters said the projected track shifted slightly east and the storm is now expected to be stronger at landfall.
The National Weather Service said it is becoming more likely Isaias will be a significant hurricane when it reaches the coast. Potential hazards include damaging winds, storm surge, high surf, rip currents, flash flooding and tornadoes. Hurricane and storm surge watches are expected later Wednesday.
Tropical storm force winds of at least 40 mph could begin as early as Friday morning or afternoon, although Friday evening is considered the most likely arrival period. The Weather Service estimated a 50% to 60% chance of tropical storm force winds across parts of coastal Alabama and northwest Florida, with lower probabilities farther inland.
Heavy rainfall is another major concern. Forecast totals generally range from 3 to 6 inches, but some coastal locations could receive up to 10 inches. The heaviest rain is expected Friday, and repeated bands could produce flash flooding, particularly in urban, low lying and poorly drained areas.
Beach conditions are also expected to deteriorate. A high risk of rip currents continues through the weekend from coastal Alabama through the western Florida Panhandle, including Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Pensacola Beach, Navarre Beach, Fort Walton Beach and Destin. Breakers could exceed 10 feet from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning, with beach erosion likely.
Forecasters emphasized that residents should not focus solely on the storm's exact track because dangerous conditions can extend well beyond the forecast cone.
