Gulf Coast – Tropical Storm Isaias is bringing a growing heavy rain and flash flood threat to the Gulf Coast and Southeast, with NOAA forecasts showing some areas could receive 6 to 8 inches of rain through Monday.
According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, areas of heavy rainfall are expected to affect the central U.S. Gulf Coast and much of the Southeast through the weekend as Isaias moves through the region.
The latest five day rainfall forecast, valid through 7 p.m. CDT Monday, shows a broad area of precipitation extending from Louisiana and Mississippi through Alabama, Florida, Georgia and into the Carolinas.
Some of the heaviest totals are forecast near the central Gulf Coast. NOAA’s map indicates widespread totals of 4 to 6 inches in portions of the region, with pockets reaching 6 to 8 inches. Local amounts could be higher.
The Weather Prediction Center’s five day excessive rainfall outlook places portions of the Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast under a moderate risk , indicating at least a 40% chance of flash flooding within the highlighted area. A broader slight risk zone stretches across portions of Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas.
Conditions offshore are also deteriorating. NOAA’s National Data Buoy Center reported Isaias passed within about 10 nautical miles of Buoy 42055 in the Bay of Campeche Wednesday morning. The station recorded a peak wind gust of 38.9 knots , or about 45 mph, along with significant wave heights reaching 5.6 feet.
Residents and travelers across the Southeast should monitor updated forecasts as rainfall could lead to localized flooding, hazardous roads and travel disruptions through the weekend.
