Huntsville, AL – Temperatures are climbing into the upper 80s and lower 90s across the Tennessee Valley Thursday, with higher humidity making the afternoon feel a few degrees warmer.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, temperatures had already reached the middle to upper 80s around noon Oct. 1 and were expected to continue rising through the afternoon.
Forecast highs across northern Alabama and nearby southern Middle Tennessee range from the upper 80s to lower 90s. The weather service said conditions are noticeably more humid than during the past several days, pushing heat index values a few degrees above actual air temperatures.
At noon, Decatur was among the warmer locations at 88 degrees. Huntsville and Muscle Shoals were both at 87 degrees, while Winchester, Tennessee, and Cullman were at 86 degrees.
The NWS did not indicate that heat index values would reach advisory levels in Thursday’s update. Instead, the main change is an increase in humidity accompanying the late season warmth.
A south breeze of 5 to 15 mph is also expected, with occasional gusts around 20 mph.
Skies were partly sunny across the locations highlighted by the weather service around midday, with temperatures continuing toward their afternoon highs.
The combination of warmer temperatures and increased moisture will make Thursday afternoon feel muggier than recent days, particularly during the warmest part of the day.
Residents across Huntsville, Decatur, Muscle Shoals, Cullman and surrounding communities should expect temperatures to peak in the upper 80s to lower 90s before easing later Thursday. The NWS advised residents to stay cool as the warmer, more humid afternoon develops.
