Huntsville, Alabama – Strong storms could bring damaging winds to parts of north Alabama from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday as the heat index reaches 102 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, there is a low chance of strong to severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening, mainly along and east of Interstate 65. The threat also covers north central and northeast Alabama and portions of southern Middle Tennessee.
Damaging downburst winds are the primary concern. Storms could also produce frequent lightning, small hail and heavy downpours, with a low potential for flooding.
People spending time outside should have more than one way to receive warnings and move indoors if they hear thunder or see lightning.
Tuesday will also be hot and humid. Highs range from 86 to 93 degrees, while the heat index could reach 96 to 102. Rain chances are 20% to 50% across eastern portions of the area.
Storm chances continue Wednesday, with a 30% to 60% chance in eastern areas. Highs fall to 82 to 90 degrees, but the heat index could still approach 95.
A larger temperature change develops late in the week. Thursday highs range from 78 to 86, with only a 10% to 20% rain chance in eastern areas.
Friday turns drier and cooler, with highs of 78 to 87 and morning lows of 58 to 63. By Saturday morning, lows drop to 54 to 60.
The immediate concern remains Tuesday afternoon and evening, when damaging winds, lightning and heavy downpours could accompany the strongest storms east of I 65.
