HUNTSVILLE, AL — North Alabama is heading toward a significant October cooldown, with temperatures in the Huntsville area falling from near 90 degrees Thursday to overnight lows in the 40s this weekend before a gradual warming trend begins.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, a change in weather patterns will bring gusty northwest winds Friday, followed by cooler afternoons and chilly overnight temperatures through the weekend.
The transition follows an unusually warm stretch, with Thursday's high expected to reach approximately 90 degrees in Huntsville.
By Friday afternoon, temperatures will fall to around 80 degrees before dropping further into the 60s Saturday.
Gusty Winds Bring a Sharp Weekend Cooldown Friday will mark the beginning of the transition, with north northwest winds increasing to 10 to 15 mph during the morning. Gusts could reach 30 mph.
The change comes as strong high pressure moves southward from Canada, bringing cooler conditions into much of the central United States.
NOAA's Weather Prediction Center highlighted the developing pattern Wednesday, noting that some areas could experience temperature declines of 20 to 25 degrees behind the advancing front.
In Huntsville, the most noticeable cooling will arrive Friday night, when temperatures are expected to fall to approximately 48 degrees.
Saturday will bring sunshine, but afternoon temperatures will reach only around 66 degrees, a 24 degree decline from Thursday's expected high.
By Saturday night, temperatures could drop to approximately 46 degrees, making it the coolest overnight period in the supplied five day outlook.
Despite the substantial cooldown, the Huntsville forecast does not indicate freezing temperatures or a frost threat.
Sunshine Continues as Temperatures Recover Unlike areas experiencing rain with the changing weather pattern, Huntsville's forecast remains dry throughout the five day period.
Sunday will bring sunshine and temperatures recovering slightly to around 69 degrees, providing comfortable conditions for outdoor activities.
The warming trend continues Monday, with mostly sunny skies and highs reaching approximately 72 degrees.
By Tuesday, temperatures are expected to climb to around 76 degrees, bringing milder afternoon conditions back to the Tennessee Valley.
The overall pattern features a sharp transition from summerlike warmth to more typical autumn conditions, followed by a gradual recovery early next week.
