Huntsville, AL – Alabama residents should prepare to turn their clocks back one hour Saturday night, October 31, as daylight saving time officially ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, November 1, bringing an extra hour overnight and earlier sunsets across the state.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, residents are encouraged to adjust clocks before going to bed Saturday night and use the seasonal change as an opportunity to check important household safety devices.
At exactly 2 a.m. Sunday, clocks will move backward to 1 a.m., marking the transition from Central Daylight Time to Central Standard Time.
The change affects communities throughout Alabama, including Huntsville, Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, Tuscaloosa and surrounding areas.
Most smartphones, computers and internet connected devices will automatically adjust to the new time. However, traditional clocks, vehicle dashboards, ovens, microwaves and other household appliances may require manual changes.
The National Weather Service is also reminding residents to check or replace batteries in NOAA Weather Radios, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors as needed.
These devices provide important protection during severe weather and household emergencies, making the twice yearly time change a useful reminder to confirm they are functioning properly.
The return to standard time means sunrise will occur approximately one hour earlier by the clock, while sunsets will also shift earlier.
For commuters, the change will bring darker conditions during late afternoon and early evening travel beginning Sunday.
Drivers should remain alert for pedestrians and reduced visibility, particularly near intersections, schools and residential neighborhoods.
Daylight saving time will begin again Sunday, March 14, 2027, when clocks move forward one hour.
For now, Alabama residents should remember to set manually operated clocks back before bedtime Saturday and enjoy the extra hour overnight.
