Huntsville, AL – Residents across northern Alabama are being urged to monitor Tropical Storm Isaias as forecasters warn the system could bring gusty winds, heavy rainfall and possible flooding after making landfall Friday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, Tropical Storm Isaias has formed over the southwestern Gulf and is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane before approaching the Alabama Florida coastal area Friday night.
Forecasters are already looking beyond the initial landfall because Isaias is expected to move rapidly northward afterward, potentially bringing impacts farther inland.
The Huntsville office said there is a medium chance of impactful gusty winds as the system tracks north. Heavy rainfall could also produce a low risk of flooding across parts of northern Alabama.
The exact severity and location of those impacts will depend on the storm's eventual track, strength and speed after landfall. Changes in the forecast could shift the areas facing the greatest wind and rainfall threats.
Residents in Huntsville, Madison County and surrounding northern Alabama communities should continue checking forecasts from the National Weather Service and other official sources as Friday approaches.
Forecasters are also encouraging people to begin considering preparations for potential power outages and flooding . That can include keeping multiple ways to receive weather warnings and ensuring essential supplies are readily available.
With Isaias still developing over the Gulf, additional forecast changes are possible before the storm reaches the coast. Residents should pay close attention to updates through Friday and after landfall as the system moves inland.
