Chilton County, AL – A traffic stop involving a man wanted on first degree rape and sodomy charges ended in gunfire early Sunday on Interstate 65, leaving the suspect hospitalized and prompting a state investigation.
According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, the incident unfolded around 2:20 a.m. Sunday on southbound I 65 near mile marker 208 in Chilton County, north of Montgomery.
ALEA said Chilton County sheriff ’s deputies and a Clanton police officer stopped a vehicle driven by Shaquiah Reese, 34, of Dothan .
Authorities said Reese was wanted out of Houston County on charges of first degree rape and first degree sodomy. Those charges are allegations, and guilt has not been established in court.
During the traffic stop, Reese allegedly brandished a firearm, prompting Chilton County deputies and a Clanton police officer to fire their weapons, according to ALEA.
Reese was struck by gunfire and transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham for medical treatment. His condition was not disclosed in the agency's initial announcement.
No deputies or police officers were injured during the incident, authorities said.
At the request of the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office, special agents with ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation are independently investigating the officer involved shooting.
ALEA said no further information was immediately available because the investigation remains active.
Once investigators complete their work, the findings will be submitted to the Chilton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
