Birmingham, AL – Three words appearing in a winter weather warning could signal an exceptionally dangerous storm in Alabama, where even limited ice accumulation can disrupt highways and electrical service. During the 2026 27 winter season, residents from Birmingham and Huntsville to Montgomery should know what those words mean.
According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, the National Weather Service is expanding the use of "Particularly Dangerous Situation," or PDS, wording in select Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings.
The wording is intended for rare, extreme storms posing extraordinary threats to lives, transportation and infrastructure.
What Are the Three Words Alabama Residents Should Know?
"Particularly Dangerous Situation" identifies exceptional danger within an existing weather warning.
In a Blizzard Warning, it emphasizes severe conditions involving strong winds and sharply reduced visibility. In an Ice Storm Warning, it could highlight potentially devastating ice accumulation.
Why Could This Matter Across Alabama?
Alabama rarely experiences blizzard conditions, but freezing rain and ice storms can create serious problems.
Huntsville, Florence and Decatur in northern Alabama face winter precipitation risks, while Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Anniston can experience icy bridges, hazardous roads and power outages.
During an extreme ice storm, Interstate 65 through Birmingham and Montgomery, Interstate 20 between Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, and Interstate 59 across northeastern Alabama could become dangerous.
Falling trees and damaged power lines could leave communities without electricity during freezing temperatures.
Southern Alabama, including Mobile and Dothan, generally faces lower risks from these particular winter hazards.
These are hypothetical impacts, not an approaching storm forecast.
Is PDS a New Winter Weather Warning?
No. PDS is additional wording within certain existing Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings, not a separate warning category.
Routine freeze warnings and winter weather advisories do not automatically qualify.
What Should Alabama Residents Do?
If PDS wording appears in a local warning, avoid unnecessary travel, follow emergency instructions and prepare for potentially prolonged disruptions.
The expanded terminology does not mean a catastrophic winter storm is currently forecast for Alabama.
