Birmingham, AL – Residents across 19 central and northern Alabama counties remain under a Flood Watch Saturday as accumulated rainfall raises concerns about overflowing creeks, rising waterways and flooding in low lying communities through Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, the Flood Watch remains in effect until 7 a.m. CDT Sunday, Oct. 11, covering Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Hoover, Anniston, Gadsden, Jasper, Talladega and several surrounding communities.
The affected counties include Bibb, Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Clay, Cleburne, Etowah, Fayette, Jefferson, Lamar, Marion, Pickens, Randolph, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Winston.
Forecasters warn that additional rainfall could contribute to flooding, particularly where precipitation has accumulated over several hours.
Unlike sudden flooding caused by a single intense thunderstorm, prolonged rainfall can gradually overwhelm streams, creeks and drainage systems, increasing the potential for flooding even after the heaviest precipitation has passed.
Communities near rivers, streams and other historically flood prone locations face particular concerns as runoff continues moving into local waterways.
Travelers throughout the Birmingham metropolitan area and surrounding counties should remain cautious near low water crossings and roads susceptible to flooding.
Although the watch covers a broad area, flooding is not guaranteed in every community. Conditions may vary considerably depending on local rainfall totals and drainage patterns.
A Flood Watch means conditions are favorable for flooding, and residents should be prepared to respond quickly if warnings are issued.
Those living near flood prone waterways should monitor changing conditions and consider preparations in case water levels rise.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to follow updated forecasts and remain alert for possible Flood Warnings through Sunday morning.
