North Aurora, IL – Scammers are posing as the IRS to steal personal data from taxpayers. They send fraudulent text messages claiming recipients qualify for a $1,400 stimulus check.
According to the Better Business Bureau, the messages look official but contain links to phishing sites. These sites can install malware or steal personal and financial details.
The IRS does not contact taxpayers through text, email, or social media. The agency will never ask for sensitive information this way.
To avoid falling victim, verify IRS communications through official mail. Never click on links in unexpected messages. Scammers create urgency to pressure victims into acting quickly. Take time to confirm all claims.
If you receive a suspicious message, report it to phishing@irs.gov and the BBB Scam Tracker.
