East Chicago, IN – A man was fatally shot Thursday evening at an apartment on the 1800 block of E. 140th Street in East Chicago. Officers responded to reports of gunfire at approximately 7 p.m. and found the victim unresponsive on the living room floor with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.
According to the East Chicago Police Department, officers and medics performed life-saving measures before transporting the man to St. Catherine Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force is investigating the incident, which preliminary reports suggest may have been an act of self-defense. Witnesses stated the victim was involved in a verbal and physical altercation with his wife when he reportedly reached for a weapon. During the confrontation, the couple’s son allegedly shot his father to protect his mother.
Authorities have not released the names of the victim or the person of interest to respect the family’s privacy. The investigation is ongoing, and no additional details are available at this time.
