Washington, D.C. – As part of National School Bus Safety Week, drivers across the country are being reminded to follow school bus stop laws to ensure the safety of children. Each day, approximately 25 million students travel by school bus, and it’s crucial that drivers obey traffic laws when buses are picking up or dropping off students.

Under most state laws, drivers must stop for a school bus when its stop arm is extended, regardless of the direction they are traveling. On four-lane roads, only traffic following the bus is required to stop. Failing to comply with school bus laws can result in fines, license suspension, or even jail time.

This year’s theme for National School Bus Safety Week is “Driving Safely for Our Children.” Drivers are urged to remain vigilant in school zones and near bus stops, helping to protect students as they travel to and from school each day.
