Raleigh, NC – North Carolina is preparing for significant rainfall and potential flooding as Hurricane Debby approaches. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a warning for the state, predicting heavy rainfall starting Tuesday afternoon and lasting through midweek.
According to the NWS, Hurricane Debby was located about 70 miles southeast of Tallahassee, FL, as of 5 AM today. The hurricane is expected to track northeast across northeast Florida and southeast Georgia through early Tuesday, then move to the South Carolina coast through early Thursday. The storm is predicted to affect central North Carolina from Thursday through early Saturday.
On the current forecast track, Debby’s rain bands may begin impacting central North Carolina by Tuesday morning. Several inches of rain are expected to fall, particularly in the Triangle area to the south and east. The most significant threat posed by the storm is heavy rainfall, with the potential for flash flooding in low-lying areas. Wind gusts as high as 25 to 40 mph are also possible from early Friday morning through Saturday afternoon, mainly along Highway 1.
The exact track and timing of Hurricane Debby remain uncertain due to the storm’s slow movement. However, confidence is increasing that North Carolina will experience torrential rains, which could lead to prolonged periods of heavy rainfall. Residents are advised to start planning now for the possibility of flooding and to stay informed through local weather updates.
