Denver, CO – A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Sunday afternoon and evening, impacting the mountains, foothills, and northern I-25 corridor. The National Weather Service Denver/Boulder reports that high-based showers and thunderstorms, many of them dry, are expected to create a heightened risk of fire starts.
According to the weather service, strong outflow winds reaching 20-25 mph and low relative humidity between 12-22% could contribute to rapid fire spread. The watch is set from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with gusty winds and dry conditions posing significant fire hazards. Areas of concern include the mountains (45% chance of fire starts), foothills (35%), and plains/urban corridor (20%).
Residents are advised to avoid any outdoor activities that may cause sparks and to report any fire starts immediately. The weather forecast also predicts scattered high-based showers and storms in the afternoon and evening, which, although potentially weak, could still trigger fires.
In addition to the fire weather watch, an air quality alert is in effect until 4:00 PM on Sunday, and a heat advisory is active until 10:00 AM. Temperatures are expected to reach 99°F today, followed by slightly cooler conditions in the upcoming week, with highs ranging from 62°F to 88°F. Clear skies and moderate air quality are predicted, but the fire threat remains a significant concern for the region.
