Grand Rapids, MI – Southwestern Michigan is preparing for a stormy night as a complex of showers and thunderstorms is expected to arrive after 8 p.m. Sunday. The storm system, moving in from northern Illinois, is predicted to weaken as it progresses, but it may still bring significant rainfall and strong winds.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, localized heavy rain is anticipated, especially after midnight. The remnants of the storm could lead to rainfall rates of up to 1 inch per hour, posing a threat of localized flooding. Areas most at risk include urban regions with poor drainage, spots prone to standing water, and roads, particularly those near and south of I-96.

Wind gusts exceeding 40 mph are also a concern. While rain is much needed in the area, excessive amounts could cause hazardous conditions overnight. The National Weather Service advises residents to remain vigilant, especially when traveling, as nighttime flooding can be harder to detect.

Residents are urged to monitor local weather updates and prepare for potential flooding in vulnerable areas. The storm is expected to slow down as it moves south across Michigan, bringing necessary but potentially excessive rain to the region.
