Indianapolis, IN – Central Indiana is preparing for a significant heatwave set to peak by the end of the weekend, with temperatures soaring into the upper 90s and high humidity levels expected.

According to the US National Weather Service in Indianapolis, the heatwave will start ramping up on Sunday with temperatures reaching 92 degrees and will continue to intensify, hitting 96 degrees by Monday. The sweltering conditions are anticipated to last through the end of next week, posing potential health risks for residents.

To stay safe in the extreme heat, the National Weather Service advises residents to hydrate regularly, wear light clothing, and apply sunscreen. It is also recommended to schedule outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day and to take frequent breaks if spending time outside. Additionally, authorities urge the community to check on pets and elderly neighbors, who are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.

Residents should avoid large meals and high-protein foods, as these can raise body heat. Caffeine and alcohol should also be minimized, as they can accelerate dehydration. Never leave children or pets in vehicles, even for short periods, as temperatures inside cars can quickly reach dangerous levels.
