Indiana Residents Warned of Fraudulent Business Scam

Indiana residents are being alerted to a rise in fraudulent businesses being opened in the names of unsuspecting victims.

According to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department, suspects need only a few pieces of personal information, such as a name and address, to file for a fake business with the Secretary of State. The goal is to secure loans against the fraudulent business, leaving the victim responsible for the payments. These cases, while trackable and resolvable, often negatively impact the victim’s credit report, which can take considerable time to recover.

Residents are encouraged to monitor their credit reports through Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, using mobile applications like Credit Karma. Any fraudulent activity should be reported immediately to local police and financial institutions.
