BOLINGBROOK, IL – A traffic incident on Interstate 55 led to citations for Asante Williams, a 31-year-old Bolingbrook resident, following a collision with an Illinois State Police (ISP) squad car on May 13, 2024. The crash occurred at approximately 7:53 p.m. near milepost 252, north of IL59, where the ISP trooper’s vehicle was parked on the highway’s right shoulder with activated emergency lights, attending to another incident.

Williams, who was driving a gray Toyota Corolla, reportedly did not move over to avoid the parked cruiser and struck it. The trooper, who was inside his vehicle with his seatbelt fastened, was transported to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Williams was unharmed but faces multiple charges, including failing to yield to a stationary emergency vehicle, reducing speed to avoid an accident, and improper lane usage, under the Move Over Law, also known as “Scott’s Law.”

This law requires drivers to change lanes when approaching any vehicle with emergency or hazard lights activated on the road. Fines for violating this law can range from $250 to $10,000, and may result in a driver’s license suspension if the incident results in injuries.
