Amarillo, TX – Triple-digit heat is set to intensify across the Texas Panhandle this weekend, with temperatures potentially reaching 107 degrees Sunday as a prolonged stretch of hot weather begins.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, high pressure is expected to return over the Panhandles this weekend, bringing drier and very hot conditions. Triple-digit temperatures could return as early as Saturday afternoon.
Saturday’s highs are forecast between 98 and 106 degrees, with a 10% chance of precipitation. Conditions become even hotter Sunday, when temperatures are expected to reach 99 to 107 degrees.
The NWS HeatRisk forecast rises from moderate-to-major Saturday to major-to-extreme Sunday. Officials are urging people planning outdoor activities to stay hydrated as the heat builds.
Little relief is expected early next week. Monday’s highs are forecast from 97 to 106 degrees, followed by 97 to 105 Tuesday and 98 to 106 Wednesday. Overnight lows generally remain in the 60s and 70s.
Rain chances also remain limited. The Amarillo forecast shows a 20% chance Sunday and 30% Monday, with precipitation chances primarily limited to northern portions of the region.
The extended outlook suggests the unusual warmth could continue into Labor Day weekend. The NWS says hot temperatures are expected to hold as the holiday approaches.
Anyone working, traveling or spending extended periods outdoors should plan for the persistent heat, drink plenty of water and monitor updated forecasts. Extra caution may be necessary during the hottest afternoon hours, particularly Sunday and into early next week.
