Itasca, IL – Drivers traveling through northwest suburban Itasca face major disruptions Monday after a semi rollover spilled a load of concrete bricks across Interstate 290, forcing authorities to close the highway in both directions.

According to Illinois State Police, the crash happened around 11:30 a.m. Monday on I-290 near Thorndale Avenue. The overturned semi spilled concrete bricks onto the roadway, leaving debris across the interstate.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-290 were shut down as authorities responded to the crash and crews worked to clear the debris.

The closure affects a heavily traveled stretch of interstate in DuPage County near the Chicago metropolitan area. Motorists approaching the area should expect delays and use alternate routes when possible.

As of shortly after noon Monday, authorities had not announced how long the closure was expected to remain in place. Drivers should avoid the affected section of I-290 until the roadway is cleared and police reopen the interstate.

No information was immediately available regarding injuries or what caused the semi to roll over.

Motorists traveling through Itasca and surrounding northwest suburbs should monitor current traffic conditions before heading toward I-290 and allow additional travel time. Drivers already approaching the closure should follow directions from police and emergency personnel at the scene.

The crash and resulting highway closure remain under investigation. Additional information is expected as authorities continue their response and cleanup efforts.
