Springfield, Illinois – Central Illinois residents should keep outdoor plans flexible Friday evening as the chance for showers and thunderstorms rises to 40%, followed by cooler nighttime temperatures through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, temperatures will remain near to slightly below normal through the rest of the week and into early next week. Friday afternoon highs will range from 80 to 86 degrees before temperatures fall to 63 to 67 overnight.
Springfield and communities across central Illinois could encounter thunderstorms during Friday evening activities and travel. Drivers should watch for rapidly changing conditions on I-55, I-72 and other major routes if storms develop. Anyone spending time outdoors should have a reliable way to receive weather alerts and move indoors when thunder is heard.
Saturday turns drier, with only a 10% precipitation chance and highs of 79 to 84 degrees. Sunday and Monday stay cooler, with highs of 76 to 82. Sunday night could fall as low as 55 degrees in parts of the region.
Rain chances remain limited through early next week, although another 20% chance arrives Tuesday night. Additional alerts could be issued if Friday evening thunderstorms strengthen.
