Marengo, IL – A 39-year-old Marengo man was airlifted to a Rockford hospital after a motorcycle crash Monday night near Marengo that authorities say left him seriously injured.
According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and emergency crews responded at approximately 10:19 p.m. Monday to the 16200 block of Poplar Road, east of Illinois Route 23. The crash occurred in McHenry County near the DeKalb County line, northwest of the Chicago metro area.
A preliminary investigation indicates the man was traveling eastbound on Poplar Road on a 2014 Harley-Davidson Touring motorcycle. Authorities said the roadway changes from asphalt to gravel in the area, and the rider lost control of the motorcycle.
The motorcycle then left the roadway to the north and rolled, ejecting the driver, according to the sheriff’s office. He was the motorcycle’s only occupant.
Emergency crews transported the man by medical helicopter to Mercyhealth Javon Bea Hospital-Riverside in Rockford. Authorities said he was listed in serious condition.
Investigators said a helmet was not located at the crash scene. The sheriff’s office also said alcohol and speed are believed to be contributing factors in the crash. Authorities have not released additional details about those factors.
The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, McHenry County Conservation Police, Marengo Police Department and Marengo Fire/Rescue District responded to the scene.
The crash remains under investigation by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit. No additional information about the driver’s condition was immediately announced Tuesday.
