Nashville, TN – A woman was fatally struck Monday afternoon after police say she was sleeping underneath a semi-truck trailer as the vehicle pulled out of a parking space behind a Nashville gas station.

According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, its Fatal Crash Team is investigating the death, which occurred around 2:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, behind the Shell gas station on Fesslers Lane.

The preliminary investigation indicates the woman was lying underneath the trailer and apparently sleeping when the semi began leaving the parking space. Police said the trailer’s rear tires struck her.

Authorities tentatively identified the woman as a 46-year-old who frequently stayed in the area. The Medical Examiner’s Office is working to positively identify her using fingerprints.

The semi-truck did not stop after the incident, according to police. Investigators said the driver may not have realized that the woman had been underneath the trailer or that she had been struck.

Police described the vehicle as a blue tractor pulling a white trailer.

The department did not immediately announce whether investigators had identified the truck or its driver. No charges were announced in the initial release.

Fesslers Lane is located southeast of downtown Nashville near Interstate 40 and Interstate 24, an area with numerous businesses and commercial traffic.

The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department’s Fatal Crash Team is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
