Chicago, IL – Northern Illinois residents could see isolated thunderstorms Sunday before a brief break Monday, but a more significant round of storms capable of producing torrential rainfall is expected to develop Tuesday into early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a cold front crossing the region Sunday may trigger a few thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening. Storm chances are around 20%, with highs ranging from 81 to 84 degrees.
Areas southeast of Interstate 57 could continue to see isolated storms early Sunday evening. Overnight lows are expected to range from 64 to 71 degrees.
Monday should bring a break from widespread rain, with partly cloudy conditions and highs between 76 and 81 degrees. That quieter period is not expected to last.
By late Tuesday, showers and thunderstorms may spread into northern Illinois, initially favoring locations north of Interstate 88. The National Weather Service shows a 30% afternoon and evening storm chance before precipitation becomes more widespread Tuesday night.
Rain chances climb to around 70% Tuesday night, when torrential rainfall could occur. Tuesday highs are forecast between 80 and 83 degrees, with overnight lows ranging from 62 to 68.
Showers and thunderstorms could continue into Wednesday, mainly during the morning, with rain chances between 30% and 50%. High temperatures may fall into the mid-to-upper 70s.
Drivers across the Chicago metropolitan area and northern Illinois should monitor updated forecasts before Tuesday evening travel, particularly if heavy rainfall develops near major highways. Conditions are expected to turn quieter again Thursday.
