Green Bay, WI – Roads across northeast Wisconsin could turn icy within hours overnight as a wintry mix spreads in, setting up a potentially slick Wednesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, snow and sleet will develop after midnight and continue into early Wednesday morning, with total accumulation staying under 1 inch. However, a light glaze of ice is possible north and west of the Fox Valley, especially between 3 a.m. and 9 a.m., increasing the risk for hazardous travel.
Communities including Rhinelander, Antigo, Shawano, and Wausau sit in the higher-risk zone for icing, while Green Bay, Appleton, and Oshkosh may see a brief mix with less ice accumulation. Major routes such as I-41, US-45, and Highway 29 could develop slick spots, particularly on bridges and untreated secondary roads.
Even a thin ice layer can reduce traction quickly, leading to spinouts during the early commute. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and consider delaying travel if conditions worsen before sunrise.
Temperatures will rise quickly later Wednesday morning, changing precipitation to rain and improving road conditions. Additional updates may be issued overnight as the system moves through.
