Lombard, IL – A Kentucky man has been sentenced to 18 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections after pleading guilty in connection with gunfire outside Yorktown Mall that left a woman wounded in November 2022.
According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, Ronald Grundy, 26, of Louisville, Kentucky, appeared in court Monday and pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony. Judge Margaret O’Connell imposed the 18-year sentence.
Prosecutors said Lombard police responded to reports of shots fired near the mall’s JCPenney parking lot at approximately 3:05 p.m. on Nov. 11, 2022.
Authorities alleged Grundy and co-defendant Jakobi Kinsey confronted two men and a woman inside the mall before the victims left and went to their vehicle. Prosecutors alleged the defendants later drove toward the victims’ vehicle and Grundy fired multiple shots from the passenger-side window.
The woman was struck in the arm and underwent surgery to remove the bullet, according to prosecutors. Authorities said five 9mm spent casings were recovered from the scene.
Grundy was taken into custody in Cook County on Nov. 14, 2022, and had remained in the DuPage County Jail. Prosecutors said he must serve 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
Kinsey’s case remains pending, with his next court appearance scheduled for Sept. 1. He faces aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated discharge of a firearm charges. The charges against Kinsey are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
