Springfield, IL – Commuters across central Illinois may run into wet and occasionally slick roads this morning as a light rain and snow mix moves through before clearing by midday.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, light precipitation will continue through around noon across west-central to southeastern Illinois, with little to no accumulation expected. Areas including Peoria, Springfield, Bloomington, and Champaign could see brief bursts of mixed precipitation, but surface temperatures near 50°F will limit impacts.
Roadways such as I-55, I-72, and I-74 may remain wet through the morning commute, with isolated slick spots possible on bridges and overpasses. Conditions improve this afternoon as skies gradually clear and precipitation exits to the east.
Temperatures drop into the upper 30s tonight before a rapid warmup begins Wednesday, with highs climbing into the upper 60s to near 70°F under partly cloudy and breezy conditions. That warming trend continues into Thursday, when highs reach the low to mid-70s.
Rain chances return late Thursday into the weekend, with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible, especially north of I-70. Drivers should stay alert this morning, but quieter and warmer conditions take hold through midweek.
