Indianapolis, IN – A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the April shooting death of a 29-year-old man after a pickup truck slammed into an Indianapolis building, police announced.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, East District officers responded to the 5000 block of East 10th Street on April 25 after receiving reports that a truck had crashed into a building. The impact was severe enough that Indianapolis Fire Department crews had to stabilize the structure before responders could safely reach the occupants.
Police said the 29-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A 15-year-old boy who had been riding in the back seat was transported to an Indianapolis-area hospital in critical condition.
Investigators initially responded to what appeared to be a serious crash, but the case changed after authorities discovered the driver had been shot. The Marion County Coroner’s Office later determined the man’s death was a homicide, according to IMPD.
Police said investigators recovered a firearm, video footage and a large amount of cash from the scene. During the investigation, homicide detectives identified the teenage passenger as the suspected shooter.
According to IMPD, detectives presented the case to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, and an arrest warrant charging the teen with reckless homicide was issued.
On Friday, Aug. 7, the IMPD Violent Crimes Unit located the 15-year-old and arrested him on the active warrant.
The charge is an accusation. The teenager is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
