Omaha, Nebraska – Roads across eastern Nebraska are set to turn slick within hours as a narrow band of snow and ice moves in overnight, threatening the Tuesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, precipitation will begin as rain before quickly switching to all snow after midnight, with the heaviest snowfall expected between 12 a.m. and 6 a.m. Temperatures dropping into the 20s will allow moisture to freeze on contact, especially on bridges and overpasses.
Forecasters expect widespread totals of 2 to 4 inches across the Omaha metro, including Fremont and Tekamah, with a more intense band setting up near Interstate 80. Areas near Atlantic, Iowa could see localized totals of 4 to 6 inches, while places farther west like Lincoln may see less than 1 inch.
The rapid changeover and narrow snow band mean conditions could vary sharply over short distances, creating uneven road hazards across Douglas, Sarpy, and surrounding counties. Elevated surfaces will freeze first, increasing the risk of early morning crashes and delays.
Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid unnecessary trips during the morning commute. Crews will be monitoring conditions closely as the snow tapers later Tuesday morning, but slick spots could linger beyond sunrise.
