Appomattox, VA – An Appomattox County sheriff’s deputy killed while helping at a crash on Route 460 is being remembered for his service and sacrifice as law enforcement agencies across Virginia offer condolences to his family and department.
According to the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III died in the line of duty Thursday, Aug. 6, while assisting at a motor vehicle crash in Campbell County. He was 33.
Virginia State Police said Duvall and another Appomattox County deputy were traveling home from the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy when they stopped to assist at an initial crash on westbound Route 460. Their vehicles were positioned in the two left lanes with emergency equipment activated.
At about 5:34 p.m., a tractor-trailer approaching the scene swerved to avoid vehicles and struck Duvall, according to a preliminary State Police investigation. Duvall died at the scene.
The resulting chain-reaction crash involved eight vehicles. Approximately seven people were taken to area hospitals with injuries of varying severity, but none were considered life-threatening, State Police said.
The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office said Friday that Duvall leaves behind his wife and three young children.
Appomattox County Sheriff Robert N. Richardson said Duvall dedicated his life to protecting the community and “gave that life while serving others.” The Sheriff’s Office said his courage, selflessness and commitment to duty would not be forgotten.
The department also thanked law enforcement agencies, firefighters, EMS personnel, emergency dispatchers and community members who have provided support.
The crash remains under investigation. The Sheriff’s Office said information about funeral arrangements and opportunities for the public to pay respects will be released when available.
