Champaign, IL – The University of Illinois cheerleading program announced Thursday that alumna and former team captain MaKayla Gayler has been selected as its next head cheerleading coach.
According to Fighting Illini Cheerleading, Gayler brings firsthand experience with the program after previously serving as an Illinois cheerleader and team captain. The official announcement highlighted her familiarity with the traditions, expectations and identity of Illinois Cheer.
Program officials said Gayler’s dedication, leadership and commitment to developing student-athletes made her an outstanding choice to guide the next generation of Fighting Illini cheerleaders.
“The Illinois Cheerleading FamILLy is excited to congratulate MaKayla Gayler on being named the next Head Cheer Coach at the University of Illinois,” the program said in its Thursday social media announcement.
The hiring places a former participant in charge of a program she already knows from the athlete and leadership perspectives. Gayler’s background as a team captain could also provide continuity for current cheerleaders as the program moves into its next chapter.
