Germantown, WI – More than 50 firefighters responded to a large early morning structure fire Tuesday that destroyed a mixed-use building in the Village of Germantown, according to the Germantown Fire Department.
According to the Germantown Fire Department, crews were dispatched at 3:49 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026, after a passerby reported heavy smoke coming from a building in the W187N12793 block of Fond du Lac Avenue.
Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke pouring from the south side of the building and immediately began an aggressive interior attack. Officials said crews encountered intense smoke and heat, and additional resources were called to the scene as firefighters opened portions of the roof to improve visibility and extinguish the blaze.
The department upgraded the incident to a second-box alarm, bringing in additional personnel and apparatus from numerous neighboring agencies. Because there were no fire hydrants near the building, water had to be transported to the scene by tanker trucks.
Firefighters remained on scene for approximately three hours, extinguishing hot spots and overhauling the structure.
Officials said two people living above the tavern safely escaped the building before conditions worsened. No firefighter injuries were reported.
The building sustained extensive fire and smoke damage and has been declared a total loss, according to the fire department.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation with assistance from the Wisconsin State Fire Marshal’s Office. No additional information has been released as investigators continue to examine the scene.
The Germantown Fire Department thanked the passerby who reported the smoke, along with the numerous fire departments, law enforcement agencies, dispatchers, and utility crews that assisted with the response.
