St. Louis, MO – A suspect was shot by a St. Louis City Sheriff’s deputy Tuesday morning after allegedly stealing the deputy’s unattended vehicle and driving away, according to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.
According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (SLMPD), the incident occurred around 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2026, in the 3600 block of Montana Avenue, where a St. Louis City Sheriff’s deputy was working an assignment.
Investigators said the deputy’s unmarked personal vehicle, which displayed Sheriff’s Department placards in both the front and rear windshields, was left running and unattended when a male suspect allegedly entered the vehicle and drove away.
Police said the deputy pursued the vehicle on foot and caught up with it near the corner of the block. At that point, the deputy reported that the suspect reached toward the center console area of the vehicle. The deputy then retrieved his department-issued firearm and fired at the suspect.
Authorities said the suspect was struck twice, exited the vehicle, and ran from the scene before encountering SLMPD officers assigned to an unrelated incident. The suspect told officers he had been shot and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The deputy was not injured, according to police.
The SLMPD Force Investigation Unit is conducting the investigation, which is the standard procedure for all law enforcement shootings occurring within the City of St. Louis. No additional information, including potential charges against the suspect, has been released.
As with all criminal investigations, the allegations against the suspect remain accusations, and any charges would have to be proven in court.
