Indianapolis, IN – Five people were displaced Sunday evening after a driver accidentally crashed a vehicle into the rear of a home while attempting to unload firewood, according to the Indianapolis Fire Department.
According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, the incident occurred at approximately 6:31 p.m. at a home in the 3600 block of Ribbon Drive.
Fire officials said the homeowner had a trunk full of firewood and drove around the side of the residence to position the vehicle near a woodpile in the backyard. As the driver attempted to back up, he reportedly did not realize the vehicle was still in drive instead of reverse.
Authorities said the driver then accelerated, sending the vehicle over a family garden and flower bed before crashing through the rear of the home.
Despite the significant damage, no injuries were reported.
The Indianapolis Fire Department’s Collapse Rescue Team responded to evaluate the structural integrity of the home. Crews stabilized the damaged load-bearing wall using temporary shoring, and a board-up contractor was called to help secure the residence.
The department’s Victim Assistance team is working with the American Red Cross to provide emergency shelter and other resources for the displaced residents.
Officials said two adults and three children were displaced as a result of the incident.
The cause of the crash was determined to be accidental, and no additional information has been released.
