College Park, Md. – Weeks of soaking rainfall have provided meaningful relief to parts of the East Coast, but the latest U.S. Drought Monitor shows drought conditions remain entrenched across many areas despite recent storms.
According to the National Weather Service Eastern Region and the U.S. Drought Monitor released Thursday, recent rainfall has improved conditions across portions of Massachusetts, Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. However, areas classified as abnormally dry (D0) and moderate drought (D1) or worse continue to stretch along much of the East Coast. Meanwhile, recent dry weather has led to worsening drought conditions in parts of Maine.
While July’s rainfall erased significant portions of this year’s precipitation deficit in some locations, many major cities remain well below normal for 2026. Raleigh, North Carolina, has received 24.04 inches of precipitation this year but still carries a 1.72-inch deficit. Baltimore remains 4.60 inches below normal, while New York City’s Central Park is 5.44 inches below average despite receiving 22.53 inches of precipitation so far this year.
Larger deficits continue farther south. Boston is running 8.18 inches below normal, Roanoke, Virginia, is 7.69 inches below, and Columbia, South Carolina, remains 9.72 inches below average. The most significant shortages are found near the Southeast coast, where Savannah, Georgia, has a 14.15-inch deficit, North Charleston, South Carolina, is 12.92 inches below normal, and Wilmington, North Carolina, remains 11.35 inches behind average rainfall for the year.
The recent storms demonstrate that even widespread heavy rain does not immediately eliminate long-term drought. Much of the rainfall is helping replenish soil moisture, streams and reservoirs, but sustained periods of near- or above-normal precipitation will be needed to fully erase the deficits that have accumulated since January.
The next U.S. Drought Monitor update will determine whether additional summer rainfall continues to chip away at drought conditions or if persistent dryness allows deficits to expand again across parts of the East Coast.
