Richmond, Virginia – Easter Sunday plans across Virginia are being disrupted by a surge of showers and thunderstorms building through the late morning, with storm chances climbing as high as 85% by midday and continuing into the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, widespread showers will expand across the state through the late morning hours, with isolated thunderstorms developing by early afternoon. The strongest storms are expected across southeastern Virginia, including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and the Hampton Roads region, where conditions could intensify later in the day.
Rain chances peak between noon and 6 p.m. across central and eastern Virginia, including Richmond, Williamsburg, and Tappahannock. Gusty winds ahead of an approaching cold front could create brief travel issues, especially on bridges and open roadways like I-64 and I-95. Localized downpours may reduce visibility below one mile at times.
Residents heading out for holiday events should plan for wet roads, secure outdoor decorations, and remain alert for changing conditions, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.
Storm activity will taper off later tonight as the cold front moves through, bringing cooler and calmer conditions to start the new week. Additional updates may be issued if stronger storms develop.
