Kansas City, Missouri – Residents across western and central Missouri should prepare for multiple rounds of thunderstorms through Friday, with the greatest concern shifting to widespread overnight rain capable of producing heavy downpours and gusty winds before another chance for strong storms develops Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will continue through Thursday, mainly west of the Interstate 35 and U.S. Highway 49 corridors. Storm coverage is expected to increase significantly after midnight, with widespread showers and thunderstorms moving across much of the region between midnight and 9 a.m. Friday.
Heavy rainfall and gusty winds are expected to be the primary hazards overnight. While the severe weather threat remains limited during the overnight period, locally heavy rain could create ponding on roads and reduce visibility for the Friday morning commute across communities including Kansas City, St. Joseph, Sedalia, Warrensburg, Clinton and surrounding areas.
Storm chances continue Friday, with additional thunderstorms developing during the afternoon and evening. Forecasters indicate a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for a few storms to become strong to severe, with the potential for damaging wind gusts, hail and heavy rainfall before activity gradually diminishes overnight.
A noticeable change arrives Saturday as cooler air settles across Missouri. Afternoon highs are expected to remain near 81 degrees, offering a welcome break from the recent stretch of heat and humidity.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts, keep weather alerts enabled on mobile devices and avoid driving through flooded roadways if heavy rain develops. Additional watches or warnings could be issued as storm clusters organize through Friday.
