SOUTH BEND, Ind. – South Bend police are investigating three separate firearm-related incidents that unfolded Tuesday night, including two shootings that left victims hospitalized and another case that resulted in an arrest.
According to the South Bend Police Department, the first incident occurred just before 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 28, near Bendix Drive and Nimitz Parkway. Officers responded to reports of a man allegedly firing shots at passing vehicles.
Police said officers quickly detained a male suspect matching witness descriptions and recovered evidence supporting reports that shots had been fired. The suspect was arrested and transported to the St. Joseph County Jail. No injuries were reported in that incident, which remains under investigation by the department’s Violent Crimes Unit.
About 30 minutes later, officers responded to the 1800 block of North Johnson Street after receiving reports of a shooting. Investigators found an adult woman suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. She was taken to a local hospital, where she was last reported in stable condition.
Roughly 20 minutes after the Johnson Street shooting, officers were called to another shooting near the Colfax Bridge in downtown South Bend. There, police located an adult man with apparent gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital with serious injuries.
Detectives interviewed multiple witnesses at the downtown scene and continue to investigate both shootings.
Police said the downtown shooting appears to be an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to public safety. Investigators also said there is currently no evidence indicating any of the three Tuesday night cases are connected.
