NEWARK, Ohio – State Route 13 in Licking County has reopened after an overnight closure tied to a fatal single-vehicle crash and investigation, according to the Licking County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Licking County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred on State Route 13 between Cooper Road and Davis Drive near Dawes Arboretum. Authorities initially closed the roadway while deputies investigated the incident, stating there was no threat to the public.
In a late-night update released at approximately 10:35 p.m., Sheriff Randy Thorp said the preliminary investigation indicates the driver was experiencing a mental health crisis before crashing into a utility pole. Investigators believe the driver later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after the crash.
A passenger in the vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries during the collision and was transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to the sheriff’s office.
Officials said the names of those involved are being withheld pending notification of family members.
The roadway has since reopened to traffic, and authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Additional information may be released once the investigation is complete.
Anyone traveling through the area can now use State Route 13 as normal.
