Duluth, MN – A stretch of hot and humid weather will continue across much of northeastern Minnesota and northwestern Wisconsin on Wednesday before a new round of thunderstorms moves into the region late Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, heat advisories remain in effect for most of the Northland on Wednesday. Afternoon temperatures are expected to reach the upper 80s and lower 90s, with heat index values also climbing into the upper 80s and low 90s. Forecasters warn the combination of heat and humidity will create a moderate to major risk for heat-related impacts, especially for those spending extended time outdoors.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air conditioning or the shade, avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day, and never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
The weather pattern will begin to change Thursday afternoon as showers and thunderstorms develop and continue into Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, isolated strong to severe thunderstorms are possible, with large hail and damaging wind gusts posing the primary severe weather threats. Storms will also be capable of producing locally heavy rainfall, with some locations potentially receiving more than an inch of rain, raising the risk for localized flooding in poor drainage and low-lying areas.
Rain chances increase significantly Thursday evening across much of the Northland before gradually tapering off during the day Friday.
