Caribou, Maine – Residents across northern and eastern Maine will see a gradual shift from isolated thunderstorms to a more widespread soaking rain over the next several days. While today’s weather will be relatively quiet for most communities, those in the northwestern part of the state should stay alert for isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, isolated showers and thunderstorms will primarily affect northwestern Maine today before shifting into western portions of the state on Wednesday. High temperatures Tuesday will climb into the lower to middle 80s across much of northern and central Maine, with cooler readings along the Downeast coast.
The weather pattern changes more noticeably on Thursday as a steadier area of rain spreads into the state. Forecasters expect the heaviest rainfall from Thursday into Thursday night across Downeast Maine, including communities near Bangor, Ellsworth, Bar Harbor and surrounding coastal areas. Rainfall amounts are expected to decrease farther north toward Caribou, Presque Isle, Fort Kent and the St. John Valley.
Although severe weather is not anticipated, brief downpours and lightning will be possible with any thunderstorms that develop today or Wednesday. Travelers should be prepared for changing road conditions later this week as periods of steady rain reduce visibility and create ponding on roadways.
Residents with outdoor plans should take advantage of the drier weather through Wednesday before wetter conditions arrive Thursday. Continue monitoring the latest forecasts, as rainfall amounts may be adjusted and additional advisories could be issued if heavier bands develop.
